Research Survey Consulting National Resources Inventory Survey Statistics Education

CSSM is an academic center in the ISU Statistical Laboratory that specializes in the research and practice for sample surveys.  Since 1938, CSSM has functioned as a collaborator in research and teaching with units at ISU and with outside institutions, as a place for graduate students to conduct research in survey statistics and methods, and as a consulting group for campus and external organizations who need assistance with survey methods and statistical analysis.

Research and Teaching:

Our faculty, staff, and students conduct research in sample design, survey estimation, and survey methods.  We also collaborate on a number of projects with federal agencies such as the USDA and other Federal Statistical Agencies, including the Census Bureau. Our long-term involvement with the National Resource Inventory (NRI), an ongoing USDA- statistical survey of land use and natural resource conditions and trends on non-Federal lands in the U.S., is one important part of our collaborative and educational efforts.  You can also visit the NRI page on the Natural Resources Conservation Service website and review the summary report for the 2007 survey for yourself.  The information tells an interesting story about how land is used, how it is eroding in places, and the changes in wetland and deepwater habitats.   We also work with the U.S. Census Bureau to improve estimation methods, statistical, modeling, and field data collection using principles of human computer interaction. This research is supported by several Federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), the Department of Agriculture (USDA), the U.S. Geological Survey, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Learn more about our collaborative research efforts in the Research section of our website.

In addition to research, our faculty teach undergraduate and graduate level students the most up-to-date and innovative methods for statistical survey research.  Students who are interested in pursuing research in survey sampling and methodology should take a look at our current students’ work and contact us for more information about the graduate degree program available with the Statistical Laboratory and Department of Statistics at Iowa State University.  Our faculty and staff work together to provide a wide variety of educational experiences outside the classroom, including regular working group meetings and seminars on different topics within the discipline.

Consulting Services:

CSSM also provides consulting services in survey sampling and statistical analysis.  We have an excellent staff of researchers and practitioners that can assist faculty from other academic departments, government agencies, area non-profit groups, and others to provide consulting, data collection, and direct operational assistance with all aspects of sample surveys involving human populations.  Our consulting  projects have involved a wide variety of subject areas including medicine, sociology, agriculture, education, and economics.
