Ordering the Works of Plato
Adam Pintar
Abstract • July 26, 2007

Plato was an important contributor to the development of philosophy, who left many writings for later scholars to digest. Although his writings have survived the ages, the order in which they were written has not survived. It is important to derive an order for these works, because the order can help us understand the evolution of Plato's thought process. This presentation considers a Bayesian statistical model for data obtained from seven of Plato's later works. The order of the writings is incorporated into the model by supposing that the parameters of the likelihood would possess a first order Markov Structure if the order were known. We consider Markov Chain Monte Carlo procedures to estimate the posterior distributions of the parameters of our model, which in the context of our model will determine the most likely order of the writings.
