A Class of Distributions for Rotations in 3 Dimensions:
With Applications to Measured Crystal Orientations

Motivated by an application in materials science, a useful class of distributions on orientations in 3 dimensions (as represented by 3x3 orthogonal matrices) is identified. The basic properties of the class and one-sample likelihood-based inference for one member of the class are investigated. Application is then made to the motivating case.
