=== Announcements ===

(April 30) I just posted another old Final Exam. Have fun. Also have fun with "Structure and Cosmetics" by the Brunettes. I haven't listened to the whole album yet, but what I have is very good.
(April 28) The last set of notes are now posted as is the Final Exam from last semester (to help you study). Enjoy. Also enjoy "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank" by Modest Mouse.
(April 24) The Exam 3 keys are now posted. Enjoy. Random music suggestion 23: "Help!" by the Beatles, Brittish version (I don't have the American release, so I don't know if that's very different).
(April 14) Notes are posted. These will keep us busy for some time. All of the project information is on the main course webpage-- just look for the appropriate links (if you weren't in class today you better take a look now as there's already a project assignment due THIS Friday). Random music suggestion 22: "Frank" by Amy Winehouse.
(April 9) The key for the worksheet on hypothesis testing is now posted (also the handout if you didn't get one in class). See you (in Marston 207) on Friday. Random music suggestion 21: "Wild Planet" by the B-52's.
(April 9) I've posted a few more Exam 3's if you'd like to study from these. The third exam will be in Marston 207 (Do not leave this time, please! I will NOT put a sign on the door telling you to go somewhere else, and if I do I will have "STAT 101 Section EF" on it and my name). Optional review sessions in place of labs tonight. Section E's review will be from 3-4:30ish and Section F's will be from 4:30-6ish. The review sessions will be in the regular lab rooms in Town Engineering. Random music recommendation 20: "So" by Peter Gabriel.
(March 25) Notes are posted. Sorry for the delay. These notes should take us through to Friday, at least. I’ll have the next set up in a day or two. Random music recommendation number 19: Cyndi Lauper’s “She’s So Unusual.”
(March 5) I'll host an optional review session today in Carver 001 from 6:30-??? Random music suggestion 18: "Begin to Hope" by Regina Spektor.
(March 3) New notes are up. Let's keep the music recommendation in the country genre today (last time, I promise). I might lose what little credibility I have with this one, but "Taking the Long Way" by the Dixie Chicks is a great album (all tracks cowritten by Minnesota musicians-- Go MN!).
(Feb 29) I'll have extra office hours at the Library this Sunday from 2-4. Look for me on the second floor by the main staircase. So far there has been no country music in my music recommendations, so for my random music recommendation number 16 let's go with Old 97's "Satallite Rides."
(Feb 29) The notes I used today are now posted. They replaced the Section 12 notes that were previously posted (fyi--these are drastic changes). Also posted are a bunch of old versions of Exam 2. I HIGHLY recommend that you use these to study for the second exam, which is Friday, March 7. The second exam will be held in Marston 207 (same place as Exam 1). I'll see if I can't post one more old exam (I'll need to find the key and scan it) before next week. Random music recommendation number 15: "Someone to Drive you Home" by the Long Blondes (which may be my favorite band name of all time).
(Feb 12) I've posted the key to the Normal Model Worksheet. Jessica has posted the key to her review sheet on the Sections A&B website. I've also posted some notes for tomorrow. I'm not saying the notes won't change some before then, but it's a good start. Random music recommendation number 14: Modest Mouse's "Good News for People Who Love Bad News."
(Feb 7) I've posted a worksheet with examples on how to use the normal model (in the handouts section). We'll use this in class on Friday (and likely Monday). In addition to going over the solutions in class I will post an answer key to this assignment by Tuesday of next week. Random music recommendation number 13: “Back to Black” by Amy Winehouse. She might be bat---- crazy, but this is one of the best albums of the last decade.
(Feb 7) Jessica has posted a very helpful review sheet and study guide on her section website (sections A&B). This would be helpful for students in all sections, A,B,E and F. Cid will go over solutions to the review sheet in an OPTIONAL lab for sections A and B next Monday. A key to the Jessica’s review sheet will be posted on her website by next Tuesday. Lab next week is also optional for sections E and F, although the times will have to change a little (I have class). Section E will meet from 3:00-4:30 and section F will meet from 4:30-6. This is a question and answer review session with me. Random music recommendation Random music recommendation number 12: “We are the Pipettes” by the Pipettes. A Brit girl group that’s been described as a cross between the Supremes and the Spice Girls (but—you know—good). Really it’s a good album and a great, great live show.
(Feb 5) The notes for tomorrow are posted. Enjoy. Also enjoy "Whatever And Ever Amen" by Ben Folds Five.
(Feb 4) New notes are posted. Random music recommendation 10: "Motown Meets the Beatles" by Various Artists
(Feb 1) The new notes are posted as both a PowerPoint presentation and a pdf file. Sections A&B-- the notes I used for class today are labeled Section 6 and are in both the folder just for you and the main notes folder. Random music recommendation 9: The Decemberists "Castaways and Cutouts."
(Jan 30) The notes that I went through in class today were modified from those that I originally posted. The modified notes are posted (the original are still available if you like). Random music recommendation 8: "Tied and True" by The Detroit Cobras.
(Jan 30) This is really an announcement for sections A & B. I've added Jessica's notes in a separate folder below. We've covered all of Chapter 5. I'm posting the notes that Jessica gave me for Chapter 6, but I doubt I'll use them exactly as is in class on Friday. I'll post another set of notes before Friday if I change anything. Random music recommendation 7 is "The Crane Wife" by The Decemberists.
(Jan 22) New notes are posted. Random music suggestion 6: Nellie McKay's "Get Away from Me."
(Jan 17) New notes are posted. I changed some of the slides in Section 2 and add more stuff. You probably don't have to print the stuff that's been changed but it will be useful to have the new stuff (at the end of the presentation) in class. This is all in the "Section 2-- Categorical Data REPLACEMENT" file. We will also cover some, if not all, of the Section 3 slides on Friday. Tonight's random music recommendation is a classic from the '90's that has a great video on Sesame Street (really, I'm not making this up). "Pocket Full of Kryptonite" by the Spin Doctors is random music suggestion five. BTW-- the BEST Sesame Street musical guest is REM doing Shiny Happy People. Not because it's a great performance (it is, but that's not the point). This is a great performance because it includes a Muppet version of Kate Pierson (of the B-52’s—she sang backup on the original song but couldn’t make the taping of the show). Look this up on YouTube!
(Jan 17) One of your classmates just asked me for help installing JMP (I failed miserably in helping--sorry). I realize now that the instructions I've linked to online aren't great (actually, they're pretty horrible). A friend of mine found some better instructions on the STAT 226 website. Here's the link to that website: http://www.stat.iastate.edu/courses/stat226/JMP.htm . I've also added the "Detailed instructions" as a pdf in the handouts folder of this website. This pdf looks like it has pretty good instructions on it but Vista users will have to mess with the UAC stuff as detailed at this website: http://www.stat.iastate.edu/resources/software/jmp/ . If you don't want to go through all of this hassle, JMP is available on Library computers. Random music recommendation four: "Fire" by Electric Six (their other albums aren't very good, but this one is fantastic!).
(Jan 15) I just posted Section 2 notes. We'll be using these in class tomorrow so you may want to print them out and bring copies with you to class. I've posted both the PowerPoint file and the PDF file so you can chose whatever format you like. I should point out that these notes do not include everything that we will talk about in class so you will want to bring a pen/pencil and something to write on (seperate paper or just leave extra wide margins when you print the notes). Random music suggestion three: "Love Travels at Illegal Speeds" by Graham Coxon.
(Jan 14) I've added a handout giving a little more background information on the Clinton impeachment data set we talked about in class today. We'll use this data set for all of the examples on Wednesday (and probably some on Friday) so if you have time you might want to take a look. The handout can be found in (appropriately) the "Handout" folder below. In case you're interested I also posted the entire data set as a JMP file in the data folder. Random music suggestion two: "The Dusty Springfield Anthology" by Dusty Springfield.
(Jan 14) Hi, and welcome to the STAT 101 sections E and F section website. I'm slowly getting this website up and running. You'll soon find lots of resources here like notes/slides used in class, old exams (and keys) to study from, announcements about the class, etc. etc. Homework and other resources can be found at the course website: http://streaming.stat.iastate.edu/~stat101/homepage.html. The first real announcement I have for you is to remind you to look at the course syllabus (in the handouts folder) and to fill out the form at the end of it and bring in the form by Friday at the latest. This will be your first "quiz" for the course. For your first random music recommendation I suggest "Naturally" by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.
Welcome to the Spring 2008 Semester!!!
